You'd be forgiven for thinking that the owners of Brim, Lawn Lane Fish & Chips (soon to be called Arlos) and Hench would rest easy knowing that their businesses are thriving after less than a year under their ownership. However, on our walks into Hemel Hempstead center, we pass an empty shop front every time. Over the last 6 months or so, we have seen this unit gradually get kitted out to become a takeaway. Sleek counters, lots of stainless steel, and neon branding gradually went in and then finally a brand name: Wa Wa Wings. And then...we waited. When would it open? Last weekend was the blessed occasion. And, as you might have gathered from this introduction, it is another card in the monopoly hand for Jwad and Amad.
This collection of fast food restaurants is owned by the two brothers. They initially started with Hench and Brim back in 2021 (after taking on Lawn Lane Fish and Chips previously to this), and opened Wa Wa Wings last weekend. All conveniently (for us) located on Lawn Lane in Hemel Hempstead although all brands are available on Deliveroo, UberEats & Just Eat. Lawn Lane will soon be known as "The quality take-away Lane" in our house as each time these guys open a place it hits the nail on the head. The food is targetted as fast food, with a modern relevance and of a high quality. If you've seen our reviews of LLF&C, Hench and Brim, you'll know that we think this fits the bill to a T. And it can't just be us that thinks so; following the success of the first three brands, the brothers have big plans to franchise and open up around the county.
So, onto Wa Wa Wings. How was it? Pretty darn good I have to say.
The chicken itself is all free-range and halal (bought locally from a farm in Bovingdon). It is juicy, tender and battered oh-so perfectly in crispy, light, flavoursome batter made to Jwad's own secret recipe. We got ours smothered in BBQ sauce which was probably the best decision I have ever made since I said to J "hey, lets order from Wa Wa Wings!" The sauce was finger-licking good in it's sweet, sour, smokey smoulder.
We also got some chicken tenders. Wonderfully moist (yes, I said it) lean chicken breast, again, battered in glorious crisp gnarly crust and then coated in a sticky, sweet teriyaki sauce.
With all that chicken going on, you'd be forgiven for ignoring the sides, but they also stand up to the test. The slaw was fresh and crunchy and zingy, and not one of the fries arrived soggy which was most excellent. They were all crisp and well seasoned in a food portion size. Actually that's one thing to mention here: portion size; all the portions we've received from Brim, Hench and no Wa Wa Wings are slightly smaller than your average fast food place. But this is in no way a bad thing. The portion sizes are actually perfect to satisfy the fast food craving but not leave you needing to undo the top button of your jeans (yep....i know you do it!) And top that off with the fact that they use great ingredients and I think you're on to a winner. One may even say a "winner winner chicken dinner"! Ok, I'll stop now.
One thing I can't comment on but wish I could is their doughnuts. They make and fry their doughnuts fresh to order and you can pick your own drizzle, coating and topping. They honestly look drool-worthy!
Honestly, every place these guys open up really lives up to the hype. Their ambition may be to franchise across the county, but i don't see why nationwide domination shouldn't be on the cards. How cool would it be for these places to be the next Maccies in years to come? The fast food brothers, know what the people want, and hot dayummm they deliver! Go check them out and support them. The food is worth it.
