Union Sourdough Pizza

Updated: Apr 11, 2021

Our first review! Of course it's a pizza place.

I am maniacal about pizza. Wherever I travel or have lived, finding a decent pizza place is the number one priority. We even visited the best pizza place in the world in Japan (yes really). So naturally as newbies to Hemel, we wanted to find a pizza place ASAP, so our first place we hit was Union Sourdough Pizza.

From we can see online, Union has started recently, run from a home in Nash Mills. Orders are placed in advance through One Delivery with full details always shared on their Instagram about ordering times etc. It felt good to give a small, new local-business some custom, in what has been a shocker of a year for hospitality.

Let's get the bad bit out of the way early - it was an hour late. To be fair, it was New Year's Eve and I'm sure they were rammed. Nonetheless, not a great start. Although the delivery driver was very apologetic.

The pizzas are also a little on the small side - not massively so, but enough that when you open the box, you feel like you will get through it quickly (which I did!). We tried the margherita and the pepperoni.

The above being said, this is pretty good sourdough pizza. A good sourdough is all about the crust and texture wise, it was spot on. Perfect amount of bite, with a good chewy texture, and light air bubbles. The char was also good. I would have liked a little more salt or flavour in the crust, but that's personal taste. It also felt artisanal and looked like it was made with the love and care of a small business.

Toppings-wise, the pepperoni was good - they went with large soft and smokey slices, as was the cheese. Where it could have done a little better was the tomato sauce - it was very heavy and tasted like tomato puree rather than a marinara. As a big fan of Sicilian style pizza (which is much more about the tomato), I think it's often an overlooked element. Union's tomato sauce was not awful at all, perfectly fine in fact, but I think it was the one ingredient they could have done better with. C felt in particular it was a bit heavy on the oregano which dominated the flavour of her margherita.

Service:

Pretty poor, but as mentioned it was extenuating circumstances!

Quality:

Decent pizza! Arrived warm and felt homemade - the crust was particularly good.

Value:

It was a little on the small side, but it did fill both of us, as the dough was quite dense.

Price:

Pizzas are about £9-11 each, with delivery £2.95. About average.

Overall:

GOOD - Putting the delivery mishap aside, this is a really solid sourdough pizza and we'd go back.
