The Curson Cake House

Updated: Apr 14, 2021

It's incredibly difficult to see the Instagram feed from the Curson Cake House and not be incredibly impressed and in awe at Sam's creative and baking talent. Sam has been running the Curson Cake House for over 10 years from her home and has honed her baking and decorating skills over the years from cupcakes to sugarcraft to layer cakes and seems to have mastered every single buttercream and sugarpaste effect there is!

With our anniversary coming up, it was a perfect excuse to try these delectable goodies. I ordered a Sharer Treat Box for £25 which included 3 Vanilla themed biscuits, 2 Chocolate hearts, 2 Mini lemon cakesicals, a Vanilla doughnut and a Salted caramel brownie and meringue kisses. Ordering was all conducted over Instagram messages because there was no clear menu that I could find anywhere. Whilst I would have liked a clear menu to be able to place the order simply, it was rather nice to be able to have the one to one advice and back and forth.

The order was ready to collect from 9am on the date required from Sam. It was beautifully packaged in a simple branded box with a ribbon. I had asked if the order could be themed like a British beach as that's where we got married and Sam certainly rose to the occasion. Every piece was sea blue (not a terribly natural colour for food but the effect was beautiful!) with sugarcraft shells and cake crumb sand. Such a lovely touch!

We got the box home and immediately dug in! I have to headline this with an ode to the chocolate brownie. The dense, gooey, rich chocolate brownie had a luscious filling of sweet caramel running through the centre; like a completely indulgent, naughty sandwich of sugary, cocoa. J and I actually fought over the last bit. He caught me red handed with "his" last chunk about 2cm from my mouth! Ooops.

The vanilla doughnut and the biscuits were simple and well-executed. The biscuits were a simple sugar biscuit that carried a gentle vanilla flavour and a crumbly, buttery, almost shortbread-like texture, but to be honest, it's the visual impact that they bring that was most impressive; each one was so perfectly decorated. The cakesicals and the chocolate cake hearts were very sweet. The thick candy shell held a light cake/buttercream filling for a more novelty sweet treat! Finally, the meringue kisses were lovely and melted in the mouth. They were nothing complex, but sweet and little, to dot around the box add a lovely effect to the entire treat set.

All in all, this was a perfect little gift. J certainly appreciated it and was scoffed the lot like kids at a sleepover!

Service:

Ordered through Instagram and got a wonderful personalised service.

Quality:

The very nature of ordering a treat box, we knew it would be lots of sugarcraft and candy coatings rather than a high end patisserie cake selection. However one cannot deny the quality of the decoration and artistry and the cakes themselves (mostly noted in the doughnut, biscuits and brownie) were wonderful.

Value & Price:

A great amount of treats for £25. I also sneakily arranged for the design to be "beachy" so that we could share with our next door neighbour who is from the Seychelles for his birthday which fell on the same day! There was more than enough treats to go round.

Overall:

EXCELLENT- Thank you Curson Cake House for this lovely order. We were so impressed and delighted by the magic touches you included that we will certainly be trying out a celebration cake from you in the future!
