Riverside Fish & Chips

Everyone needs a local chippy. We were lucky in that Lawn Lane Fish and Chips were one of the first places we reviewed when we started back in Jan - and they were really good. Not gourmet good or anything like that, but the sort of place you can happily recommend if you want a fish and chips.

Anyway. We were feeling like we should probably try another place to see how Lawn Lane compared. We went with Riverside Fish and Chips - which is often spoken about highly in the Hemel Hempstead Facebook group.

So we got a piece of cod and plaice, a single portion of chips and a scampi. That came to £23 (which included a £3 delivery and service fee). The food arrived nice and quickly, still warm. The portions were nice and big and it certainly looked appealing.

Generally speaking this was a pretty decent fish and chips. The fish was from frozen, which is fine, pretty much all fish and chips are, but this had a slight dryness and chew if we're being honest. The cod was a bit on the thin side (I would query if we actually just had two plaice portions.....).The batter was thin, which is good, often bad fish and chips hide behind thick batter, so you can't taste the fish. The only thing I would say about the batter was it was slightly on the oily side. But the fish held together well and tasted good.

The chips were good - just what you want from a chippy. Thick and soft. We decided to flavour them ourselves so we got a sense of what the base flavour was.

The scampi was also good - we've had some truly awful scampi over the years, but this was juicy with a nice crumb on the batter. It was a little salty and we would have liked to taste a bit of sweetness that you get with good scampi, but again this hit the spot.

Overall, this is another safe choice of fish and chips. It's nothing special - but if you're looking for a local this or Lawn Lane are good choices

Service:

Nice and fast via Deliveroo

Quality:

Fish tasted like it had come from frozen, which to be fair is like most inland fish and chips. Slightly over salted scampi too. Nothing much fresh, but nothing offensive either.

Value & Price:

£23 for two people is good value, even if we only got one portion of chips. Portions are big.

Overall:

GOOD- A safe option if you're on the lookout for a local chippy.
